Memorandum

Two years ago, the Tokaj Wine Congress was born from the realisation of the increasing need of a change in paradigm to address the problems in agricultural research, education and practices in the wine sector.

The 2nd Tokaj Wine Congress

The main goal of the Congress is to pass on knowledge to professionals that is up-to-date, useful, and easy to put into practice from a holistic perspective and to create an international scientific platform for the unique viticultural and oenological traditions of the Tokaj World Heritage Wine Region. The University of Tokaj and University of Debrecen would like to strengthen their international scientific network in the transdisciplinary fields of viticulture, oenology, wine culture and wine business through inviting lectures by top scientists, researchers and practicing professionals, worldwide known viticulturists, and winemakers. The Congress is open to scientists, students, educators, managers, policy, and decision-makers. It will consist of invited lectures, scientific sessions with oral and poster presentations, and a scientific and cultural excursion.

Congress Sessions

I. ADVANCES IN VITICULTURE

The objective of this session is to highlight new challenges for viticulture in terms of vine development, ecology, climate change, IT applications, and regenerative sustainability.
The Congress will be hosted in Sárospatak (Hungary, Tokaj Wine Region) from 27th to 31st of October 2024, arranged jointly by University of Tokaj and University of Debrecen.

II. ADVANCES IN OENOLOGY

The objective of this session on ‘Advances in Oenology’ to present cutting edge research from all areas of winemaking from a truly transdisciplinary perspective.

III. WINE AND HEALTH

The objective of the session is to shed light on the significant health-related aspects of wine production, consumption, and the bioactive compounds of grapevine and wine.
The Congress will be hosted in Sárospatak (Hungary, Tokaj Wine Region) from 27th to 31st of October 2024, arranged jointly by University of Tokaj and University of Debrecen.

IV. HERITAGE CONSERVATION, WINE- AND GASTROTOURISM

The session will present new holistic approaches to all aspects of the built and intangible cultural heritage of wine, heritage conservation and its potential for tourism.

V. WINE ECONOMICS, POLICY, AND INNOVATION IN MULTIFUNCTIONAL AGRICULTURE

The objective of the session is to shed light on the primary economic challenges encountered in these sectors, emphasizing the necessity of multifunctional agriculture.

VI. WINE SCIENCE EDUCATION

The objective of this session is to present truly transdisciplinary system approaches to education in grape cultivation, wine production and multifunctional organic agriculture.
The Congress will be hosted in Sárospatak (Hungary, Tokaj Wine Region) from 27th to 31st of October 2024, arranged jointly by University of Tokaj and University of Debrecen.

A TREASURE TROVE FOR WINE ECONOMISTS

Although there is a particular session for Wine Economics, the Congress addresses most of the significant economic challenges encountered within all areas of wine production such as grapevine cultivation, vineyard management, mitigation of adverse impacts of climate change, use of renewable energy, wine quality and consumer preferences, circular green economies in agriculture, multifunctionality of wine enterprises to enhance economic viability, heritage conservation and sustainable wine tourism, wine gastronomy and development of successful wine marketing strategies. Deep comprehension of the economic dynamics in these sectors and a proven track record in offering innovative, effective, and efficient solutions to economic challenges in this fast-changing world are paramount.

Accommodation

Hotel Hunor

Hotel Hunor is situated in the north of Hungary, at the feet of Magas-Hill in Sátoraljaújhely. As it is surrounded by mountains, it gives a picturesque sight of the landscape.

Hotel Rákóczi

The Rákóczi Hotel*** is located in the middle of a beautiful 8-hectare plot, which is partly covered by primeval forest and surrounded by Natura 2000 areas.

The Mád Wine Academy

The Mád Wine Academy is an organizational unit of the University of Debrecen located in Mád, the aim is to coordinate and fund research activities that support the awareness of the wine region to both the Hungarian and the world’s wine-loving public.

Dereszla Winery

Dereszla is among the wineries with the greatest history in the Tokaj Wine Region, and the history of Hungary can be followed with the history of the cellar. ince the 2015 vintage, Henye Winery, part of the Dereszla group, has made their dry wines and Pezsgő (methode traditionelle sparkling wine).

Rákóczi Harvest House

Rákóczi Harvest House is the headquater of Tokaj Research Nonprofit Ltd., which was renovated in 2021. It is also the place for the practical adaptation of university theoretical education. 

Gróf Degenfeld Castle Hotel

Gróf Degenfeld Castle Hotel together with Theresa Chapel built in 1750 in Tarcal and renovated by the Count Degenfeld family in 2015. Its nice landscape offers a unique location for events. The chief winemaker produces all the varietal wines clearly introducing the leading grape varieties of the region – the Furmint, Harslevelu and Yellow Muscat – and making sweet Tokaji wine specialities including the famous Aszú wines.

Grand Tokaj Ltd. Szegi Cellar

The Grand Tokaj is owned by the Foundation of University of Tokaj since August 1, 2021. A guardian and protector of the national winemaking traditions in its posiotion as the largest winery in the historical Tokaj Wine Region, bearer of the title of the Unesco World Heritage Site.
